Asia’s largest AI summit signals China’s global tech ambition

The World AI Conference 2025 opened in Shanghai from July 26–28, unveiling over 3,000 AI innovations, including 40 large language models (LLMs), 50 smart devices, and 60 next-generation robots. More than 800 global companies participated—among them Huawei, Tencent, DeepSeek, Tesla, and Amazon. The event marks Asia’s most expansive AI showcase to date and underscores China’s accelerating push to lead the global artificial intelligence industry.

Premier Li calls for global solidarity and sovereign tech

Held under the theme “Global Solidarity in the AI Era,” this year’s conference reflected Beijing’s dual message: international cooperation and domestic resilience. Premier Li Qiang opened the summit, reaffirming China’s ambition to become the global leader in AI by 2030.

Despite ongoing U.S. export controls on semiconductors, Chinese firms remain determined. Open-source players like DeepSeek are gaining global traction. Its R1 model stood out for high multilingual performance and reduced compute costs—demonstrating local innovation in spite of global headwinds.

Premier Li’s speech further emphasized China’s intent to shape global AI governance while continuing to advance its sovereign capabilities. His call for multilateral standards signaled Beijing’s desire to set the rules—not just follow them.

LLM launches, robotics demos, and tech diplomacy

Among the 3,000 innovations on display, LLMs and robotics dominated headlines. DeepSeek’s model earned praise for balancing efficiency with versatility. Meanwhile, Unitree Robotics introduced next-gen human-assist bots capable of industrial and healthcare applications.

Huawei launched its new Ascend AI chips, reinforcing its position in edge computing. Alibaba Cloud unveiled generative AI platforms for smart cities and fintech, while Nvidia, Amazon, and Tesla showed their continued interest in the Chinese market. Their presence highlighted China’s relevance in global AI value chains—even as geopolitical tensions persist.

The conference also hosted investment matchmaking, startup exhibitions, and policy roundtables, fostering ties with countries across Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East.

A stage for innovation and international influence

WAIC 2025 served as more than a showcase of emerging tech—it was a carefully crafted signal of China’s ambition in AI leadership and governance. Premier Li’s keynote and the participation of international players illustrated China’s ability to lead dialogue on ethical AI, open-source ecosystems, and industrial standards.

The blend of state coordination and private-sector dynamism was evident. Companies like iFlyTek, SenseTime, and Tencent demonstrated scalable edge-AI systems. Their readiness for deployment contrasts with slower-moving regulatory environments in the West.

Foreign companies maintained a diplomatic tone—engaging with local partners while navigating the challenges of operating in China. This delicate balance reflects the ongoing realignment in global tech strategy, especially in sensitive sectors like AI.

WAIC as a launchpad for Asia’s AI diplomacy

Looking ahead, WAIC is poised to become the premier platform for AI diplomacy in Asia. Multiple partnership agreements were signed during the event, involving firms and institutions from Singapore, Indonesia, and the UAE. These deals point to a shift toward South–South collaboration, bypassing traditional Western-dominated tech ecosystems.

China is also leveraging the conference to promote ethical AI frameworks, encourage cross-border R&D, and support regulatory harmonization across emerging markets. By shaping norms on LLM safety, algorithmic fairness, and digital surveillance, WAIC could influence both commercial and policy pathways.

As AI-native startups scale globally and generative models mature, future editions of WAIC are likely to influence funding flows, regulatory debates, and digital infrastructure choices across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

With its combination of technical breakthroughs, international presence, and geopolitical signaling, WAIC 2025 confirms that China is not just keeping pace—it’s aiming to lead in the global AI race.
