Singapore hosts top regional summit blending science, startups, and strategy for the future of food

The Growth Asia Summit 2025, held from July 15–17 in Singapore, brought together over 700 delegates from across the global health, nutrition, and food-tech sectors. Leaders from consumer goods companies, research labs, startup accelerators, and government agencies gathered to explore the rapid evolution of Asia’s nutrition economy.

This year’s edition focused on themes such as personalized nutrition, plant-based innovation, and AI-powered food development. The summit also emphasized regional cooperation, scientific integrity, and scalable wellness products designed for Asia’s diverse populations.

Asia’s appetite for health-first innovation

Consumer behavior in Asia is shifting rapidly. A growing number of people are choosing products that support health, wellness, and sustainability. This transformation is driven by urban lifestyles, aging populations, and post-pandemic awareness.

The Asia-Pacific health and wellness food market crossed US$140 billion in 2024 and is forecast to grow at double-digit rates until 2027. Within ASEAN, countries such as Singapore and Thailand are emerging as leaders in functional foods, probiotic beverages, and sustainable nutrition.

Singapore stands out as a natural host for the summit. Its strong R&D base, clear food safety laws, and strategic location have turned it into a launchpad for regional innovation. Organized by NutraIngredients-Asia, the Growth Asia Summit returns for its fifth year with a bigger platform and broader international participation.

Innovation through collaboration

Collaboration was the central message of this year’s event. Panels and workshops focused on regulatory cooperation, consumer behavior analysis, and advanced digital tools in food production. The summit featured multiple strategic announcements by global and regional players.

Unilever unveiled a new open innovation platform based in Singapore that will help startups co-develop next-generation wellness foods. Thai Union, known for its global seafood operations, launched a new nutrition-focused R&D lab in Bangkok. The facility will study marine-based protein solutions and sustainable ingredients.

Japan’s Foodvalley Tokachi also made headlines. The R&D cluster showcased cross-border partnerships with ASEAN food labs, focusing on clean-label formulations and regionally adapted processing methods.

Meanwhile, several venture capital firms launched dedicated seed funds to invest in startups working on functional snacks, hydration boosters, and digital nutrition diagnostics. These moves suggest a maturing market with strong investor confidence.

Why ASEAN’s time is now

Unlike Western markets, where dietary trends often center on keto, dairy, or red meat, Asia’s nutritional habits are rooted in local staples and sensitivities. Issues like lactose intolerance, rice-heavy diets, and herbal traditions influence how products must be developed and marketed. This complexity gives ASEAN a creative edge.

Thailand and Singapore are already creating regulatory systems that allow faster testing and approval of novel products. These frameworks support not just local companies, but also attract global brands looking to innovate in Asia-first formats.

At the summit, the visible presence of both scientists and regulators demonstrated how public and private sectors are working together. Transparency, evidence-based health claims, and adaptive labeling are becoming central to building consumer trust.

From lab to label, then beyond borders

With each passing year, the ASEAN region moves from being a follower to a first mover in food-tech. The next wave of innovation is expected to focus on scalable solutions with both local relevance and global appeal.

Diagnostic tools for gut health, AI-generated flavor profiles, and hybrid products combining traditional herbs with scientific validation are already in early-stage testing. Singapore’s universities and science parks are signing more MOUs with regional labs to support these efforts.

There is also growing interest in exporting ASEAN’s food-tech models. For instance, Thailand’s rice-based sports beverages are already drawing attention from health retailers in Europe. With more research and regional certification, such products could reach global shelves within the next few years.

The summit also hinted at broader integration between nutrition startups and public health goals, such as reducing childhood obesity, managing chronic illness, and improving rural nutrition access.

ASEAN steps forward as a global food-tech force

The Growth Asia Summit 2025 confirmed a critical shift. Southeast Asia is no longer just a market for health products—it is a creator, collaborator, and soon, a global exporter of nutrition innovation.

With strong investment, progressive regulation, and a culture of research-led development, the region is well-positioned to define the future of food. Singapore, in particular, continues to play a leadership role by offering a platform where science, strategy, and startup energy converge.

As global demand rises for healthier, cleaner, and more culturally inclusive food solutions, ASEAN’s nutrition economy is stepping into the spotlight.
