State aims to become a cultural magnet through global music partnerships
Assam has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Big Tree Entertainment, the parent company of BookMyShow, to bring international music concerts to the state. This strategic move by the Assam Tourism Department aims to position the northeastern state as a vibrant music and tourism destination in Asia.
The partnership is expected to boost Assam’s profile on the global cultural map, increase tourism, and generate new economic opportunities in hospitality, logistics, and creative services.
Tapping into tourism through culture
Assam is already known for its lush tea estates, river valleys, and diverse tribal heritage. Over the past few years, the state government has focused on developing infrastructure, air connectivity, and tourism campaigns to attract both domestic and international visitors.
Now, by integrating large-scale entertainment into its growth plan, Assam is expanding its tourism strategy. The partnership with Big Tree Entertainment represents a new approach—one that blends cultural identity with commercial viability. Big Tree has a proven track record, having organized some of India’s biggest concerts and festivals, including U2’s India debut and multi-genre fests across major cities.
Global music, local opportunity
Under the MoU, Assam will host a calendar of high-profile international concerts, featuring renowned global and Indian artists. These events are designed not just for spectacle, but also for sustainable tourism and local economic upliftment.
The state plans to build dedicated music venues that align with eco-tourism guidelines. It will also promote green event formats, minimize waste, and engage local artists and vendors to ensure inclusive growth. Big Tree will manage artist curation, production, marketing, and global ticketing, leveraging its international network.
Additionally, these concerts are expected to drive demand for local hospitality services, transport providers, food and beverage businesses, and artisanal products—creating a ripple effect across multiple sectors.
Northeast India’s cultural rise
This move comes at a time when India’s northeast is stepping into the cultural spotlight. Long underrepresented in national narratives, the region is now drawing attention for its rich heritage, indigenous arts, and music traditions.
By collaborating with major entertainment firms, Assam is following a path similar to Goa and Rajasthan—two states that have used music tourism to create sustained global interest. However, Assam’s initiative is more than a branding exercise. It’s a development strategy rooted in economic transformation through cultural soft power.
Importantly, these events can serve as global platforms for Assamese and Northeastern musicians, giving them the exposure and resources to expand their reach. This creates an ecosystem where local meets global—both artistically and economically.
Concerts as a growth catalyst
The first international concert under this partnership is expected to debut in 2025. It will serve as a litmus test for Assam’s readiness to host world-class entertainment infrastructure. The Tourism Department anticipates an uptick in visitor footfall, employment, and regional brand visibility.
If successful, the initiative could evolve into an annual or seasonal concert circuit, potentially linking Assam with other Northeastern states. This would establish the region as an alternative to India’s traditional entertainment hubs, such as Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi.
Furthermore, sustained success could draw foreign direct investment (FDI) into regional infrastructure and creative industries—spurring long-term growth well beyond the event calendar.
Assam strikes a bold cultural chord
With this MoU, Assam is amplifying its voice on the global stage. By weaving together music, tourism, and economic development, the state is setting a powerful example of how culture can become a growth engine.
As international artists take the stage and audiences arrive from across India and abroad, Assam’s transformation into a music-led tourism hub could become a defining chapter in the region’s story. More importantly, it reflects a bold reimagination of how India’s Northeast engages with the world—through rhythm, identity, and opportunity.
