India’s marquee tournament draws world-class players to New Delhi

The Indian Open Badminton Super 750 will take place in New Delhi from July 1 to 6, 2025, once again welcoming top-ranked players from around the world. As part of the HSBC BWF World Tour, the tournament remains one of Asia’s most prestigious badminton competitions and plays a crucial role in shaping Olympic rankings ahead of Paris 2026.

India’s hosting of this tournament reflects its strategic push to increase global influence through sports. It strengthens infrastructure, supports Olympic disciplines, and expands India’s soft power on the international stage.

From national meet to global spotlight

The Indian Open began in 2008 as a Grand Prix Gold event. It then progressed to Super Series status and, under BWF’s revised structure in 2018, moved into the Super 500 category. Its growing reputation led to an upgrade to the Super 750 level in 2023—placing it among badminton’s elite global events.

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) organizes the tournament. It takes place at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, one of Asia’s largest sports arenas. Major sponsors and public institutions continue to back the event, helping it become a staple on the international badminton calendar.

Olympic rankings and Asian power

With Olympic qualification on the line, the Indian Open Super 750 offers high-stakes ranking points. It is expected to draw stars such as Viktor Axelsen, An Se Young, PV Sindhu, and HS Prannoy, all of whom seek to improve their seeding ahead of the 2026 Games.

Asia continues to dominate world badminton. Countries like India, China, Japan, Indonesia, and South Korea use this tournament as a battleground for regional prestige. The competition also strengthens Asia’s image as the global leader in the sport.

Ticket sales have grown year on year, and broadcasting agreements now span the globe. Coverage via BWF TV and digital platforms ensures a wider reach and increased visibility.

Sport as a tool of diplomacy

India is no longer defined by cricket alone. The Indian Open Super 750 is part of a broader strategy to diversify its sports portfolio and build international recognition through Olympic disciplines.

This effort aligns with national initiatives such as Khelo India, which promote grassroots sports while nurturing elite athletes. Hosting globally respected tournaments helps India project its leadership and strengthens its bid to host major events like the Asian Games or the Youth Olympics.

These moves are not just about medals—they’re about shaping how the world sees India’s role in global sport.

Asia’s rise and India’s ambition

As the center of badminton continues to shift eastward, Asia is leading a new era in the sport’s development. India wants to go beyond participation. It aims to become a platform-builder, hosting higher-tier tournaments and shaping the game’s commercial future.

The 2025 edition of the Indian Open is a proving ground. If successful, it could lay the foundation for hosting a Super 1000 event or even the BWF World Championships.

India is investing in smarter infrastructure, expanding prize pools, and offering improved fan experiences. These steps signal its readiness to join the highest levels of global badminton administration and influence.

India’s tournament, Asia’s moment

The Indian Open Badminton Super 750 is no longer just another tournament. It has become a statement of intent. Through elite competition and Olympic significance, India is asserting itself as a central player in the global badminton community.

With athletes, fans, and broadcasters watching, New Delhi’s 2025 edition could shape the future of the sport in Asia and beyond. It also underscores India’s commitment to becoming a true global sports destination—both on and off the court.
