Born in 1944 in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, Liu Chuanzhi grew up during a transformative period in China’s history. His father, Liu Gushu, was a “patriotic capitalist” who worked secretly for the Communist Party before the 1949 revolution. Liu pursued his education at the People’s Liberation Army Institute of Telecommunication Engineering (now Xidian University), specializing in radar systems. After graduating in 1966, he began his career as a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). However, during the Cultural Revolution, Liu was labeled an “intellectual element” and was sent to work as a laborer on state-owned farms from 1968 to 1970. He returned to CAS in 1970, resuming his role as an engineer-administrator.
